5-Step Installation Guide

Green Drain is engineered for simplicity. Every model uses the same drop-in method. No plumbing skills, no special tools, and no modifications to your existing drain are needed.

Step 1: Remove the drain grate

Lift or unscrew the existing drain grate from your floor drain. Set the grate and any screws aside in a safe place. You will reinstall these after the Green Drain is in place. If the grate is stuck, gently pry it up with a flathead screwdriver.

Step 2: Measure your drain opening

Use a tape measure to find the inside diameter of the drain body. Measure across the widest point of the circular opening - this is the pipe's inner diameter, not the grate size. Match this measurement to the correct Green Drain model using the sizing chart below. Getting the right size is the most important part of the process.

Step 3: Insert Green Drain into the drain body

With the silicone flaps pointing downward, push the Green Drain straight into the drain body. It should sit flush with or just below the top of the drain pipe. The flexible housing will compress slightly for a snug, friction fit inside the pipe. No adhesive or sealant is needed.

Step 4: Replace the grate

Set the original drain grate back on top of the drain. Because the Green Drain sits entirely inside the pipe, the grate fits exactly as it did before. There is no visible change to the drain appearance.

Step 5: Fasten screws (if applicable)

If your drain grate uses screws, reinstall them to secure the grate. Many floor drains use gravity-set grates that do not require screws. Either way, installation is complete. Water, cleaning solutions, and waste will flow through the Green Drain normally while sewer gas, odors, and pests are blocked from below.

How to Measure Your Drain

Choosing the right size is simple. Remove the drain grate and measure the inside diameter of the drain pipe. Do not measure the grate itself, as grates are often larger than the pipe opening. Measure the widest interior point of the round pipe opening.

If the drain pipe is slightly oval or worn, take two measurements at right angles and use the smaller number. For drains with internal ledges, measure above the ledge where the Green Drain will sit.

Model Pipe Diameter Common Applications
GD125 1.25" Small fixture drains, condensate lines
GD15 1.5" Sink drains, small fixture traps

GD3 3" Standard floor drains, commercial restrooms
GD35 3.5" Larger floor drains, commercial kitchens
GD4 4" Large floor drains, mechanical rooms, commercial kitchens

Installation Tips by Application

The drop-in method works the same everywhere, but here are a few tips for specific drain types and settings.

Floor Drains

The most common application. Remove the grate, measure the pipe, and drop in the Green Drain. If the drain has not been used in a while, flush it with water first to clear any debris from the pipe interior.

Models: GD2, GD3, GD4, GD6

Shower Drains

Shower drains typically use 2" pipes. Remove the strainer cover and any hair catcher basket before measuring. The Green Drain sits below the strainer, so water and soap flow through normally during use.

Models: GD2, GD3

Commercial Kitchen Drains

Kitchen floor drains handle grease and food particles. Green Drain's silicone flaps allow debris to pass through without clogging. For kitchens, periodic rinsing with hot water helps keep the flaps clean and responsive.

Models: GD3, GD35, GD4

Mechanical and Utility Rooms

HVAC condensate lines, boiler rooms, and utility closets often have drains that go months without water flow. These are prime locations for dried-out P-traps. Green Drain eliminates the need to manually refill trap primers.

Models: GD125, GD15, GD2, GD3

Restroom Floor Drains

Commercial restroom floor drains are frequently mopped but may still lose their trap seal between cleanings. Green Drain provides continuous protection against sewer gas and pests regardless of water levels in the trap.

Models: GD2, GD3, GD4

Basement and Storage Area Drains

Drains in basements, storage rooms, and seldom-used areas are the most likely to have completely dry traps. Install Green Drain in these locations first for immediate odor and pest protection, even if the drain is rarely used.

Models: GD3, GD4

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a plumber to install Green Drain?

No. Green Drain is designed for drop-in installation that anyone can complete in under 60 seconds. No plumbing experience, special tools, or adhesives are required. Simply remove the drain grate, insert the Green Drain, and replace the grate. Facility maintenance staff, property managers, and homeowners regularly install Green Drain themselves.

Do I need a permit?

In most jurisdictions, no permit is required because Green Drain installs inside an existing drain without modifying any plumbing. It is a removable, non-permanent device. That said, building codes vary by location. If you are working in a commercial facility or are unsure about local requirements, check with your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before installation.

What if my drain is an unusual size?

Green Drain is available in 8 sizes ranging from 1.25 inches to 6 inches, which covers the vast majority of standard drain pipes used in residential and commercial buildings. If your drain falls between standard sizes or has a non-standard shape, contact our team. We can help you identify the correct model or discuss options for unusual configurations.

How deep should Green Drain sit in the drain?

Green Drain should sit flush with or slightly below the top of the drain pipe. The device is designed to rest on the internal ledge of the drain body. It does not need to be forced deep into the pipe. A proper fit means the drain grate sits flat on top exactly as it normally would, with no visible change to the drain appearance.

Can I install Green Drain in an existing drain?

Yes. Green Drain is specifically designed to retrofit into existing drains. There is no need to replace the drain body, modify piping, or break into the floor. The device drops directly into the drain pipe and works with your existing grate. This makes it ideal for both new construction and retrofit projects.

How do I know which size to order?

Remove the drain grate and measure the inside diameter of the drain body using a tape measure. Match your measurement to the sizing chart: 1.25" (GD125), 1.5" (GD15), 2" (GD2), 2.5" (GD25), 3" (GD3), 3.5" (GD35), 4" (GD4), or 6" (GD6). If you are between sizes or unsure, send us a photo of your drain and we will recommend the right model.
