We had a floor drain in the basement, and the trap frequently dried out, resulting in a bad odor. This worked very nicely to eliminate the odor.
This works very well. Installs incredibly easily – just push it down into the drain pipe. The rubber flexes to let it easily slide into the 2″ drain pipe, but it seems to seal off the pipe perfectly. Another reviewer said he has to remove it and clean it every 2-3 weeks – that makes no sense… This is intended for a drain that gets infrequent use. (I put it in the drain on my laundry room floor that will not get water down it other than in an broken pipe incident or some other rare issue.) Don’t use this in your main shower that gets used daily, it is not a drain cap or drain strainer. This is to prevent the sewer gasses from coming out of a drain, but in most plumbing there is a P-Trap that holds water and seals off the drain from sewer gasses so this is not necessary. I could see using this in a guest bathroom shower that only gets used once a month or something then the water in the P-Trap could evaporate between uses. But a shower with that infrequent use should not have issues with this getting “dirty” and needing cleaned.
Had this product and it’s been working great so far. The key was to push it down 3 or 4 inches into my drain. We have a ton of water flow that I had to slow down just a tad with our adjustable shower head, but then boom, no backups. Also, our shower drain has a very bad smell. Probably somebody in the past installed it without a p-trap. This product removed the bad smell! I’m hoping it continues to work well for the long haul with regular cleanings.
I rent a newly remodeled house and had sewer gas backing up into the shower every time someone used it. My landlord (who is a plumber himself!) basically refused to believe that he installed anything wrong. Well clearly he didn’t install the P trap or vent right. His solution was to put a wet rag over the drain when we were done if we really thought it was that bad.
Anyway, this thing works perfectly. It sits flush with the drain. The water drains a TINY bit too slow, but unless I take a 15+ minute shower it’s a non issue for me. My shower doesn’t have a “water saving” head as far as I know. It’s a totally regular shower with regular water pressure, at least based on my experience in 30 years of showering… The reviews here that say “don’t use this in a main shower” are way, way overblown. I almost didn’t order this because of them, but I’m glad I did.
I still think fixing the P trap or vent would be the proper solution, but it’s not my house. Plus, this is a lot easier than tearing up the tile shower to inspect and fix the trap.
This waterless trap is very easy to install in 4 inch pipe. Just make sure you have the correct size and slide right in. Install takes less than a minute. Have multi-family home that has floor drain in utility room. I had the drain snaked out previously but could not figure out where the smell in the room was coming from. Talked to a plumber who said he could not help me since it was not plastic pipe that he could attached to. Another plumber wanted $350 to try to fix. Finally found this product and love it. Smell has gone away right away. I tested the trap unit in a utility tub before I installed to see how it worked. You could run water thru the top at full blast and water will drain out thru it. When you turn it upside down and run water on the unit it repels the water from coming thru. Clever and great value. Thinking may need to replace it ever 5 years or so since it is rubber and will come in contact with floor water, dirt, and keeping the sewer gases in the sewer.
I had an issue with backflow of a basement drain if I did more than two loads of laundry. This little gadget was exactly what I needed! It still lets water drain out (from a home dehumidifier) but keeps unwanted water from coming up.
Definitely worth the money!
My basement bathroom’s toilet and shower share the same pipe to the sub pump. It doesn’t get frequently used, but soon after it does the sewage smell coming up from the shower drain is awful. I was pouring bleach down there, flushing the toilet multiple times, dish soap, hot water… Then i found this thing and any and all smells have been mitigated. The fit is more loose than I expected for my pipe (as if it were 2.65″), but the upper most lip of the plug covers the pipe opening. Hasn’t seemed to affect its function. Highly recommended. Super easy fix for a long standing miasma.
The Green Drain seal completely stopped the odor coming from the floor drain in my furnace room. It was easy to install. I simply pushed it down the 3 inch pipe and within a few hours the room smelled like a house again instead of a sewer drain. Then the whole house smelled better. Didn’t know the smelly floor drain was affecting the upper floors too.
Well made and seems to block sewer gases well. I had read another review about using on a 2 inch floor drain. My 2 inch floor drain goes straight down and thus if this falls it would be lost. I took a scrap piece of PVC and cut out approximately 3/4 of an inch to make a snap ring and pushed it down inside the 2 inch pipe so that it could not fall. Works well
Bought 3 of these for the floor drains at my shop and I’ve noticed a big improvement in the amount of drain flies to the point where I rarely see any anymore. I highly recommend if you have any issues with drain flies. Super easy to install – basically a plug and play thing. If used in a high volume floor drain you may need to unplug and clean off once in a while to remove any build up.
